Iohexol
Iohexol is a safe, nonionic, low osmolar contrast agent used during X-rays as well as CT scans. It is
eliminated exclusively by the kidneys, where it is filtered but not secreted, metabolized, or
reabsorbed. It has less than 2% binding to protein. Therefore it makes an ideal marker of GFR and a
good alternative to radiotracers, which are not suitable for some patients and require special
handling, storage, and disposal. It has also a low allergic potential.
In order to have the contrast agent to work as efficient as possible it needs to undergo a deashing procedure to remove all impurities. This can be done very efficiently by means of ion exchange.
